It existed from 37 BC until 668 AD. The kingdom covered the northern and central parts of the Korean peninsula. It also held land in parts of modern-day Northeast China. At its strongest, it reached into eastern Mongolia and parts of Russia. It was one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. This kingdom played a huge role in the history of its neighbors.

The kingdom's name has a very interesting meaning. Some say the name comes from words meaning "high castle."

The word "Guryeo" might have originally meant a fortress or a castle. Later, the name was shortened to "Goryeo." This name meant "high and beautiful." This old name is very important today. It is actually the reason we call the country "Korea" in English.

Stories tell us how the kingdom began with a man named Jumong.

He was a prince from the Buyeo kingdom. He was a very famous and skilled archer. Some legends say his father was a heavenly prince. He fled his home after a struggle with other princes. Jumong eventually reached a place called Jolbon. There, he married a woman named Soseono. She provided the money to help him build his new state.

Life in Goguryeo was shaped by the land itself. Much of the territory was filled with big mountains.

This made it very hard to grow enough food for everyone. Because of this, the people became very strong warriors. They often went to neighboring lands to find more resources. They even had special riders wearing heavy armor. These riders were known as cataphracts.

Goguryeo stayed a great power for many hundreds of years. However, the kingdom eventually faced many hard times. There were fights within the kingdom and long wars with others. In 668 AD, an alliance of Silla and the Tang dynasty defeated them.
