The Goguryeo–Sui War was a series of invasions by the Sui dynasty of China. These attacks were aimed at Goguryeo, which was one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. The fighting lasted from the year 598 to 614. This conflict was very important for history. It helped cause the end of the Sui dynasty. Soon after, the Tang dynasty took over in China in 618.

The wars began because of disagreements between leaders. The Sui dynasty had united China in 589. They wanted to be the leaders of all nearby lands. However, King Pyeongwon and King Yeongyang of Goguryeo wanted to be equal to the Sui. In 596, Emperor Wen of Sui sent messages demanding that Goguryeo stop raiding borders. King Yeongyang responded by launching an invasion against the Chinese in 597. This set the stage for many years of fighting.

In 598, the first major invasion began. Emperor Wen sent his son, Yang Liang, with 300,000 soldiers. These troops were mostly horse archers. They faced very heavy rain when they arrived. This rain made it hard to move or carry food. Many soldiers also became sick. At the same time, a navy led by Admiral Zhou Luohou faced rough seas. The Sui navy lost many ships to both waves and attacks.

Years later, Emperor Yang prepared a much larger force. He built the Grand Canal to move troops from the south to the north. In 611, he began gathering soldiers. By 612, the army was huge. Some records say there were 1,133,800 troops. This line of soldiers was 300 km long. The Sui army tried to cross the Liao River. King Yeongyang's troops used the river to defend their land. The Sui built bridges, but they were too short at first.

One of the most famous parts was the Battle of Salsu River. A Goguryeo leader named Ulchi Mundok used a clever plan. He tricked the Sui army into marching deep into his territory. He made them feel like they were winning. When the Sui army reached the Salsu River, the Goguryeo forces attacked. This was a very hard day for the Sui. Out of 305,000 men, only 2,700 returned home. These long wars used up many resources. The people in China eventually rose up against the Sui. This led to the dynasty's fall and the rise of the Tang.
