The fighting lasted from the year 598 to 614.

In 598, the Sui sent a large army. Heavy rain and sickness hurt the Sui soldiers. Many ships were also lost at sea. Later, the Sui built a Grand Canal. This canal helped move troops and food.

In 612, the Sui sent over one million soldiers. This was a massive force.

Goguryeo leaders used smart plans to fight back. They used rivers and strong forts to stay safe. A leader named Ulchi Mundok tricked the Sui army. He made them march deep into his land. Then, the Goguryeo forces attacked at the Salsu River. This battle caused many Sui soldiers to die. Only 2,700 men returned from one large group.

The long wars cost the Sui dynasty much money and lives. Many people in China rose up against their leader. This led to the fall of the Sui. A new group, the Tang dynasty, took over in 618.
