Ulchi Mundok was a great leader in Goguryeo. This was a land in Korea. He was born in the mid-500s. He was smart and knew how to write poems. He was also a skilled soldier. He eventually became a top commander.

In the early 600s, the Sui dynasty from China attacked. Their army was much bigger than the Goguryeo army. Emperor Yang of Sui led over one million troops. Ulchi Mundok had to defend his nation. He used clever plans to win. He used fake retreats to trick the enemy. He also used sudden attacks.

One big fight happened at the Salsu River. The Sui sent 305,000 men to attack the city of Pyongyang. Ulchi Mundok led a surprise attack from all sides. The Sui troops were very confused. Most of that large force did not make it back. Only 2,800 men returned alive.

This victory kept Goguryeo safe. People in Korea still honor him today. A street in Seoul is named after him. Even a navy ship carries his name. He is a true hero of Korea.
