The Eastern Turkic Khaganate was a powerful group of people. They lived on the Mongolian Plateau. This land is a huge area in Central Asia. The group was part of the First Turkic Khaganate. This larger empire was started by the Ashina clan. The name "Turk" might mean something strong or young. Some people say it means "born" or "created." Others think it comes from a word for a helmet.

This group grew very fast. They took control of the Mongolian Plateau from the Rouran. They also spread west toward the Caspian Sea. The Turks became very rich through trade. They controlled the Silk Road, which was a famous path for goods. They even got 100,000 rolls of silk every year from China. This silk was used for trading in Central Asia.

History shows that the empire did not stay together. Between the years 581 and 603, the group split into two parts. One part was in the east. The other part was in the west. This split happened because of many wars. Different leaders fought to rule the land. This time of fighting was a very hard period for the people.

In the year 630, a big change happened. The Tang dynasty from China defeated the Eastern Turks. The last independent ruler was a man named Illig Qaghan. He led raids against the Tang for many years. Before he was captured, there was a time of great hunger. Cold weather caused many animals to die. This made life very difficult for everyone.

After the Eastern Turks lost power, the land changed again. A group called the Xueyantuo moved into the territory. Other groups like the Uyghurs also lived nearby. Even though the empire fell, the Turkic people remained important. Later on, a Second Turkic Khaganate was formed. It is amazing to see how these old lands changed over time.
