Turkic migration

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Turkic migrations were a huge movement of people across Eurasia. This happened between the 4th and 11th centuries. These people spoke Turkic languages and shared a common culture. As they moved, they spread their way of life across the wide steppes. Many different tribes moved at different times. Some moved as traders, soldiers, or townspeople. This movement helped shape the history of many lands.

Finding the original home of these people is a big job for scientists. Some experts believe the homeland was in Mongolia. Others look at South Siberia or the Manchuria region. Genetic evidence points to a place near South Siberia and Mongolia. Some researchers say the people came from a wide area. This area went from South Siberia to the West Liao River Basin. It was not just one single group moving at once. Instead, many different groups spread their languages across the land.

One of the most famous groups was the Göktürks. They rose to power in the 6th century. The name Göktürk means "blue" or "celestial." They first became strong after they overthrew the Rouran Khaganate. This happened in the area we now call Mongolia. A leader named Bumin declared himself Khagan in 551. His sons, Issik and Muqan, continued to lead his people. By 568, their lands were very large. Their territory even reached the edges of the Byzantine Empire.

After the Göktürk empires ended, new groups took their place. These included the Uyghur Khaganate and the Khazars. There were also groups called the Cumans and the Kara-Khanid Khanate. Some Turkic people chose to stay in one place. They built settled societies like the Qocho and Ganzhou Uyghurs. In the 11th century, the Seljuq dynasty moved into Anatolia. This led to Turkic people living there permanently. This changed the history of that region forever.

Today, the legacy of these migrations is easy to see. Many modern nations have large Turkic populations. These include Turkey, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, and Kyrgyzstan. You can also find Turkic people in parts of Russia. These areas include Chuvashia, Bashkortostan, Tatarstan, and the Sakha Republic. Some Turkic groups live in China and Mongolia too. Even in Iran and Northern Cyprus, people speak Turkic languages. Their long journey helped create the diverse world we see today.
