history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Göktürks were a group of people living in Inner Asia long ago. They are also called the Celestial Turks or the Blue Turks. This group was very important because they became a main power in their region. They started the First Turkic Khaganate, which was a large group of nomadic tribes. This empire helped shape the culture and the way people lived in that part of the world. Many different groups of people would follow the paths they helped create.

People have many different ideas about what their name means. Some think the word 'Turk' means strong or full of strength. Other experts say it means being young and vigorous, like a person in their prime. It might also mean being as ripe as a piece of fruit. The name 'Göktürk' is special because it connects to the sky. Some believe it means 'Blue Turk' or 'Celestial Turk' because the sky is blue.

The history of the Göktürks began with a group called the Ashina clan. In the year 439, about 500 Ashina families moved northwest. They lived near the Rouran Khaganate, which was a large power in the area. For many years, these people lived north of the Altai Mountains. While they lived there, they were known for working with metal. They were a mix of many different people who all spoke Turkic languages.

In 552, a leader named Bumin Qaghan took control of the region. He and his sons led the people to become a great power. At their strongest point in the late 500s, they grew very large. They even had 100,000 cavalry troops on horses. These soldiers were very skilled and moved across the land quickly. The empire eventually split into two parts, the eastern and the western empires.

Eventually, the Göktürks had many conflicts with the great dynasties of China. They fought against the Sui dynasty and later the Tang dynasty. In 630 AD, the Tang army won a major fight called the Battle of Yinshan. They captured the leader, Illig Qaghan, during this time. After this, the Eastern Turks were ruled by China. Some of the Turkic nobles were even given jobs as imperial guards.
