This was a large and strong land. Bumin was the eldest son of a man named Ashina Tuwu. Before he was a great ruler, he was a chieftain. He led the Turkic people while they lived under the Rouran Khaganate. The Rouran were the powerful group that ruled over the Turks at that time.

Bumin's rise to power happened through many important steps. First, his tribe grew much stronger around the year 545. He led his people to win over many others. He accepted the surrender of over 50,000 households from the Tiele tribes. This showed he was a very capable leader. He also began to make friends with the Western Wei state. This state was located in China.

By making these connections, Bumin gained more authority.

A major change happened because of a disagreement with the Rouran. Bumin asked the Rouran leader, Anagui, for a princess to marry. Anagui refused his request. The Rouran leader even called Bumin a "blacksmith slave." Some historians think this meant the Turks served the Rouran as blacksmiths. This insult made Bumin very angry. He killed the messenger and stopped being loyal to the Rouran. He decided to lead a revolt to gain independence for his people.

In 551, Bumin married Princess Changle from the Western Wei. This marriage helped him build strong ties with China. In early 552, Bumin led his army against the Rouran forces. His army won a great victory near a place called Huaihuang. After this win, Bumin became the Illig Qaghan. This title means he was a ruler who had land. He united the various Turkic tribes under one rule. He and his people used Turkic laws to govern their new land.

Bumin did not rule for a very long time. He died only a few months after becoming the Illig Qaghan. Some people believe he died from injuries he got during the war. He had a younger brother named Istemi who helped rule the western parts. Bumin's family, the Ashina tribe, had a very long history. Modern scientists studied the DNA of his granddaughter, Empress Ashina. They found that his people came from Northeast Asia. This helps us understand where the Turkic people began their journey.
