These people were semi-nomadic, which means they moved from place to place. They were famous for being skilled riders on horseback. They lived in the Pontic-Caspian steppe and the Volga region. This was between the 5th and 7th centuries. Many people wonder where they first came from. Some researchers think their roots are in Central Asia.

As the Bulgar tribes moved west, they met many other groups. This process of joining different groups is called ethnogenesis. They met and absorbed tribes like the Huns. They also met Iranic and Uralic groups. These meetings changed their culture and their people. The Bulgars spoke a Turkic language. They also followed a faith called shamanism. They believed in a sky deity named Tangra.

In the 7th century, the Bulgars began to settle in one place. Around the years 630 to 635, they made a land called Old Great Bulgaria. This state did not last very long. In 668 AD, the Khazar Khaganate defeated them. After this, a leader named Khan Asparukh took action. In 681, he conquered a place called Scythia Minor. This opened a path to the region of Moesia.

Khan Asparukh started the Danubian Bulgaria. This was also called the First Bulgarian Empire. In this empire, the Bulgars were the leaders. They lived near settled Slavic tribes. Over many years, the Bulgars and Slavs merged together. This made them the ancestors of modern Bulgarians.

Other Bulgars moved to the Volga River in the 7th century. They founded Volga Bulgaria and stayed there until the 13th century.

Today, we can still see the history of the Bulgars. The Volga Bulgars are linked to the Volga Tatars. They are also linked to the Bashkirs and the Chuvash people. The name "Bulgar" might mean "mixed" or "to stir." Some scholars think it might mean "disturbers" or "rebels." This shows how much history can change over time. Their story helps us understand how modern groups began.
