For hundreds of years, two strong lands fought for power. One was the Byzantine Empire. The other was the Bulgarian Empire. They fought over land in the Balkan peninsula. These wars began after the Bulgars took parts of the land after 680 AD.

The fighting happened many times. Sometimes one side won, and sometimes the other side won. These leaders made many choices that changed history.

In the early years, a leader named Asparuh led the Bulgars. He fought against the Byzantine leader Constantine IV. Asparuh won a battle near a place called Ongala. Because of this, the Byzantine leader had to pay money to Bulgaria in 681 AD. Later, a leader named Tervel helped a Byzantine emperor named Justinian II. Tervel brought 15,000 horsemen to help the emperor.

Justinian II gave Tervel a special title called kaisar. This made Tervel a very important person.

Many years later, the wars became even more intense. A Bulgarian leader named Krum led his people to big victories. He defeated many Byzantine armies in the mountains. In 811 AD, the Byzantine leader Nikephoros I led a large group of soldiers. Krum set traps in the mountain passes to stop them. This battle was very hard, and the Byzantine leader died.

After Krum died in 814 AD, his son Omurtag made a peace treaty. This peace lasted for thirty years.

Bulgaria grew strong again under a ruler named Simeon I. He ruled from 893 to 927 AD. Simeon had many successful campaigns against the Byzantines.

His son, Peter I, made another long peace treaty. But after Peter, the Bulgarian state began to grow weak. In 971 AD, the Byzantine emperor John I Tzimiskes defeated Boris II. The Byzantines also captured the Bulgarian capital, which was called Preslav.

A leader named Samuel tried to help the Bulgarians again.

Eventually, the Byzantines gained the upper hand once more. Under a leader named Basil II, the Byzantines won a big battle at Kleidion. They completely conquered Bulgaria in 1018 AD.

There were many rebellions later, but they did not succeed. The fighting continued for a long time. Finally, the Ottoman Turks captured the Bulgarian capital in 1393 AD. They also captured the Byzantine capital in 1453 AD. These wars shaped how the Balkan area looked for many centuries.
