His family was called the Cometopuli, which means "sons of the count." This name came from their high rank in Bulgarian society.

Samuel's rule was a time of constant fighting. He worked hard to keep Bulgaria independent from the Byzantine Empire. The Byzantine ruler was a man named Basil II. In his early years, Samuel won several big battles. He even led campaigns into Byzantine lands. Later, he had to spend most of his time defending his own empire.

He fought to protect his people from much larger armies.

Samuel moved the center of his empire to a new place. He moved the capital from Skopje to the city of Ohrid.

Ohrid was a very important place for culture and military strength. Because of his rule, some people call his land the Western Bulgarian Empire. During his time, his territory grew quite large. It covered much of the Balkans, reaching down toward southern Greece.

This helped restore the strength of Bulgaria in that region.

Many people thought Samuel was incredibly strong. Some even called him invincible in power. A poet in Constantinople even compared him to a comet in the sky.

His brothers, David, Moses, and Aaron, also helped rule. They shared the work of leading the different parts of the land. This group of brothers helped manage the empire during a very difficult time. They worked together to defend their borders against many different threats.

Life for Samuel ended during a very hard period. He died of a heart attack on 6 October 1014. This happened just two months after a huge battle at Kleidion.
