Murad grew his empire by taking new lands in two different places. First, he took the city of Adrianople in the 1360s. He made this city the new capital for his people. He also moved into Southern Europe to rule much of the Balkans. He made the leaders of Serbia and Bulgaria pay him tribute. This tribute was money or goods sent to a ruler. He divided his large land into two main provinces. These were Anatolia in Asia and Rumelia in the Balkans.

To keep his empire, Murad had to fight many different wars. He fought against the Karaman group in Anatolia. He also fought against people in Europe like the Serbs and Hungarians. In 1371, his lieutenant Lala Şâhin Paşa defeated a Serbian group. Later, in 1385, the city of Sofia fell to the Ottomans. However, things were not always easy for him. In 1386, a leader named Prince Lazar defeated an Ottoman force. This battle at Pločnik caused many Ottoman soldiers to die.
