By the time Constantine XI was born, the empire was much smaller than it used to be. He was the fourth son of Emperor Manuel II Palaiologos and Helena Dragaš.

He was very good at military skills like horsemanship and hunting. His older brother, Emperor John VIII, trusted him a great deal. Because of this trust, Constantine served as a regent twice. A regent is someone who rules when the main leader is away. He helped rule the capital in 1423 and again in 1437. These jobs showed he was a capable administrator as well as a brave soldier.

In the 1420s, Constantine helped rule a province called the Morea.
