Constantine made many big changes to help his empire stay strong. He separated the government into two parts. One part handled civil matters and the other handled the military. He also changed how the army worked. He created mobile units that stayed near him for campaigns. He also had troops stationed at the borders to stop raids. To help the economy, he introduced a gold coin called the solidus.

His father was Flavius Constantius, a Roman army officer. His mother was a Greek woman named Helena. Constantine began his career fighting in the eastern provinces against the Persians. Later, he moved to the west to fight with his father in Britannia. After his father died in AD 306, his army named him emperor. He eventually became the sole ruler of the empire by AD 324.

Religion was a huge part of his rule. In AD 313, he helped create the Edict of Milan. This law made Christianity legal and stopped people from being treated unfairly for their faith.

He also called the First Council of Nicaea in AD 325. This meeting helped create the Nicene Creed, which is a statement of Christian belief. On his orders, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was built in Jerusalem. He also founded a new capital city called Constantinople.

This city was once known as Byzantium.

Constantine's legacy lasted for a very long time. His new capital, Constantinople, remained a major center for over a thousand years. This period is often called the Byzantine Empire in English. Even though he was a powerful leader, modern scholars still study his true beliefs. Some people in history saw him as a perfect example of virtue. Others look at the official records with more caution. His life remains a key part of how we understand the history of Europe and the Mediterranean.
