Roman Empire

history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Roman Empire was a huge state that ruled many lands.

It controlled the Mediterranean Sea and much of Western Europe. It also reached into North Africa and Western Asia. This empire was one of the largest in human history. People used the phrase "empire without end" to describe it. They believed their rule would last forever in time and space.

To run such a big area, the Romans used a system.

They divided their lands into different types of provinces. Some were senatorial provinces ruled by leaders called proconsuls. Other provinces were imperial provinces that belonged to the emperor. These were ruled by special officials known as legates. This helped the leaders manage people across many different lands.

Before it was an empire, Rome was a republic.

A republic is a system where many people share power. However, civil wars and political fights caused great trouble. A leader named Octavian eventually won a major fight at the Battle of Actium in 31 BC. In 27 BC, the Senate gave him the title Augustus. He became the very first Roman emperor.

For two hundred years, the empire saw great peace.

This time was called the Pax Romana. It was a period of stability and wealth for many people. The empire grew even larger under the leader Trajan. Later, things became harder for the Romans. They faced a 49-year crisis with wars, plagues, and invasions. The leader Diocletian eventually split the empire into eastern and western halves.

Eventually, the Western Roman Empire collapsed in 476 AD.

This happened as Germanic peoples moved into Roman lands. But the Eastern Roman Empire lived on for a long time. Historians call this the Byzantine Empire. It stayed strong until the fall of Constantinople in 1453. Roman ideas still shape our laws, art, and ways of government today.
