Instead of one king, Rome used a new system of government. They elected leaders called consuls to serve for only one year. A group of leaders called the Senate also helped run the city. This system was an elective oligarchy, which means a few powerful families held most of the control. It was not a full democracy like the one in ancient Greece.

Roman society was divided into two main groups of people. The patricians were the wealthy elite families who held most of the power. They controlled the high offices and the priesthoods. The plebeians were the common people, such as farmers, traders, and artisans.

For a long time, the plebeians had very little say in how Rome was run. To fight for fairness, they used a tool called a secession. This was when they stopped working to show their anger. Because of this, they eventually won the right to elect tribunes. These tribunes could use a veto to stop unfair laws.
