Long ago, Rome was ruled by kings. In 509 BC, the people changed this. They started the Roman Republic.

Instead of one king, they chose leaders called consuls. These leaders were elected each year. A group called the Senate helped guide the city.

Two main groups of people lived in Rome. The patricians were rich and powerful families. The plebeians were common people like farmers and traders. For a long time, patricians held all the power. The plebeians fought for fairness. They even elected tribunes to protect their rights. By the 4th century BC, they gained more equality.

Rome grew by winning many wars. They took over the Italian peninsula. They also fought a big rival named Carthage. Rome won those wars and became very strong.

Later, the Republic faced many civil wars. Powerful leaders like Julius Caesar rose to power. After much fighting, Octavian became the leader in 27 BC. This marked the start of the Roman Empire.
