history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Roman Empire was a very large state.

It ruled much of Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia. Before it was an empire, Rome was a republic. A republic is a way to rule with many leaders. But civil wars caused much trouble. A man named Octavian won a big battle. In 27 BC, the Senate gave him the name Augustus. He became the first emperor.

Later, things became difficult. The empire faced wars, sickness, and invasions. To help, the leader Diocletian split the empire into two parts.

The Western Empire fell in 476 AD. This happened after many groups moved into Roman lands. But the Eastern Empire lived on. It was called the Byzantine Empire. It lasted until 1453. Roman laws, art, and ideas still help our world today.
