Western Roman Empire

history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Roman Empire was a very large land. It grew so big that one leader could not rule it all. It was hard to send news or orders to far places. In 286, a leader named Diocletian tried a new way to rule. He split the empire into two parts. He had two senior leaders called Augustus. One ruled the East and one ruled the West.

This split lasted for a long time. In 395, the empire was divided between two sons. Honorius ruled the West from a place called Ravenna. Arcadius ruled the East from Constantinople.

Things became hard for the West. In 476, a man named Odoacer led an army. He defeated the Roman army in the West. He made the last emperor, Romulus Augustulus, step down. Odoacer became the first King of Italy.
