Long ago, people first called this place Astacus. It was a colony for people from a place called Megara. Later, a leader named Nicomedes I rebuilt the city in 264 BC. He gave it the name Nicomedia. This city became a major center in a region called Bithynia. It stayed important for many hundreds of years.

The city was built to be a grand place for many people. It had many large public buildings to help everyone. There was a forum for meeting and a theater for shows.

One of its most important things was the water supply. The city used two or three aqueducts to bring water in. These are long stone paths that carry water from far away. One aqueduct was even built a very long time before the Roman era.

Nicomedia became famous when it became a capital city. In 286 AD, the emperor Diocletian chose it as his capital. It was the most senior capital for the eastern Roman Empire.

This was part of a new system called the Tetrarchy. The city grew even larger during this time. Diocletian built a huge palace and a place to make coins. He also built an armory and new shipyards for boats. The city was a busy place for soldiers and leaders.

Many different kinds of people lived in Nicomedia together. There were Roman leaders and many different soldiers. Some Jewish people moved there from a place called Macedonia.

We know this from old stones found in a cemetery. These stones had symbols like the menorah and the shofar. The city also saw many hard times and changes. It faced big fires and a huge earthquake in 358 AD. These events forced people to rebuild the city many times.

Today, the old city of Nicomedia is mostly hidden. It lies under the modern city of İzmit. Most of the old ruins are buried deep underground. However, some parts are still visible to visitors. You can see sections of the old Roman walls.
