Arrian was a very important man from the Roman period. He lived as a Greek historian and a philosopher. He also served as a public official and a military leader. Arrian was born in Nicomedia, which is in a place called Bithynia. Today, that same area is known as İzmit. His family belonged to the Greek aristocracy. Because his name shows he was a Roman citizen, his family likely held that status for many generations.

Arrian spent much of his time learning from others. Around 117 to 120 AD, he went to Epirus. While there, he attended lectures by a teacher named Epictetus. Arrian became a dedicated student of this philosopher. He even wrote down the teacher's ideas in a book called the Enchiridion. This was a small handbook of philosophy. Because of this, we know almost everything that is left about Epictetus today.

Arrian was a very well-educated person. In his time, this was called paideia. This word meant a person was highly learned and respected. Because he was so smart, people called him the "young Xenophon." This was a way to compare him to a famous person from the past. Arrian was also a friend to the Roman emperor Hadrian. The emperor trusted him with many big jobs.

Around 130 AD, Arrian became a consul. This was a high position in the Roman government. In 132 AD, Hadrian made him the governor of Cappadocia. He served in this role for six years. During his time there, a group called the Alani tried to invade. They were led by King Pharasmanes II of Iberia. Arrian used his legions to stop their advance. His leadership helped keep the territory safe.

Arrian wrote many books that help us understand the past. His most famous work is the Anabasis of Alexander. This seven-book series tells about the wars of Alexander the Great. Many scholars think it is the best source for those stories. He also wrote a book called Indica about India. Another work, the Periplus of the Euxine Sea, was a voyage report for the emperor. His writing helps us see how people lived and fought long ago.
