The Byzantine Empire was a very important part of history. It was actually the continuation of the Roman Empire. This empire was centered in a city called Constantinople.

While the western part of Rome fell, this eastern part stayed strong. It lasted for many hundreds of years through the Middle Ages. People living there did not call themselves Byzantines. They called themselves Romans and lived in a land they called Rhomanía.

The name "Byzantine" was only used by others much later.

How the empire changed depended on its leaders. Constantine I was a very important leader from 306 to 337. He moved the capital to Constantinople and helped make Christianity legal.

Later, Theodosius I ruled from 379 to 395. He made Christianity the official state religion. During his time, the Greek language slowly replaced Latin for official use. The empire also began using a defensive strategy to stay safe. This meant they focused on protecting their borders from outside groups.

One of the most famous leaders was Justinian I. He ruled the empire from 527 to 565. During his reign, the empire reached its greatest size.

He even won back parts of Italy and the Mediterranean coast. Justinian I also helped rewrite the laws into a new code. He rebuilt much of the capital city after a revolt. One of his most famous buildings was the Hagia Sophia.

Life was not always easy for the empire. A big plague started around the year 541. This sickness made the empire's money and military much weaker. In the 630s and 640s, the empire lost Syria and Egypt.

These lands were taken by the Rashidun Caliphate. Later, the empire grew again under the Macedonian dynasty. This was a time of great art and learning. However, wars and civil wars eventually caused them to lose more land.

The end of the empire came in stages. In 1204, the city of Constantinople was attacked during the Fourth Crusade.

This event broke the empire into smaller pieces. The empire did manage to take the city back in 1261. But they only had a small amount of power left. For the next two hundred years, the Ottomans slowly took more land. Finally, in 1453, the Ottoman Empire captured Constantinople. This event brought the long history of the empire to a close.
