The Middle Ages is a very long period in European history. It is the middle part of a three-part story. This story starts with classical antiquity and ends with the modern period. Most historians say it began around the year 500. It lasted until about the year 1500.

Some people use different dates to mark the end. They might look at the year 1453 or 1492. This era is divided into three main stages. These stages are the Early, High, and Late Middle Ages.

During the Early Middle Ages, many big changes happened. The Western Roman Empire fell apart first. This led to many groups of people moving across Europe. These groups are often called Germanic peoples. They moved into the old Roman lands to form new kingdoms.

In the 7th century, a new Islamic empire grew. It was called the Umayyad Caliphate. It took control of North Africa and the Middle East. At the same time, the Byzantine Empire stayed strong in the East.

The High Middle Ages began after the year 1000. This was a time of growth and new ideas. The weather became warmer during this period. This helped farmers grow much more food for everyone.

Because there was more food, the population grew larger. Society used systems like feudalism to stay organized. In this system, knights provided military service to lords. In return, they received the right to use land. People also built beautiful Gothic cathedrals like Chartres.

Life in the High Middle Ages also included new learning. People started to found many universities. They studied a way of thinking called scholasticism. This helped them join faith with reason.

Great artists and writers also lived during this time. You might know the poet Dante or the traveler Marco Polo. The painter Giotto made famous works of art. These achievements helped shape how people saw the world. Even as kings built strong nations, the church remained very important.

The Late Middle Ages was a much harder time. Many people faced famine, war, and sickness.

A huge sickness called the Black Death spread quickly. Between 1347 and 1350, it killed about one third of the people in Europe. There were also many revolts by peasants. These difficult years eventually led to new changes. These changes helped the world move into the modern age. This transition included the Renaissance and the Age of Discovery.
