This period lasted from the late 5th century to the 10th century. Historians sometimes call the start of this time "late antiquity." This name shows how it still felt like the Roman era. Some people used the name "Dark Ages" in the 1800s. They chose this because there are few books from this time.

Today, most scholars do not use that name anymore. They prefer to focus on how the world was changing.

Many things changed in how people lived during these years. The population in cities began to drop significantly.

Trade also became much harder for people to do. In some places, large industries like pottery vanished quickly. It became unsafe to travel or carry goods far away. Because of this, people began to live in much smaller groups. This made life feel very local for most families. Even the way people farmed changed during this time.

Many groups of people moved across Europe during this era.

These movements are often called the Migration Period. Groups like the Goths and the Vandals moved into new lands. The Huns also arrived and built their own empire. These moves changed the laws and the culture of Europe. In the west, the Roman way of life changed a lot. In the east, the Byzantine Empire stayed strong for a long time.

However, sickness also changed the world during this time. The Plague of Justinian began in the year 541. It is estimated that this disease killed many millions of people.

These changes helped build the world we know today. The movements of people helped create new languages. For example, people in France and Italy speak Romance languages. These languages grew from the Latin spoken by the Romans.

Later, the Vikings expanded from the north into new areas. These different groups all left their mark on history. By the end of the 10th century, Europe was very different. The new ways of farming and living set the stage for the High Middle Ages.
