The Ottoman Empire was a massive state that lasted for many centuries. It covered large parts of Southeast Europe, West Asia, and North Africa. This empire was centered in the land we now call Turkey. For six hundred years, it sat at the center of the world. It helped connect the Middle East with Europe through trade and travel. Because it was so large, it held many different kinds of people.

Managing such a huge area was a very big job. The empire used a system to keep peace among many groups. These groups were called millets. Each millet was a community with its own religious beliefs. Under Islamic law, these groups could manage their own local affairs. This helped different people live together in the same empire. It was a way to handle many different cultures at once.

The empire began as a small group in the late 1200s. A leader named Osman I started a small state in northwestern Anatolia. His followers were mostly Turkish tribal groups. Over time, his family grew their power across the region. In 1453, a sultan named Mehmed II conquered the city of Constantinople. This event ended the Byzantine Empire. This victory made the Ottomans a major force in the world.

At its peak, the empire was a true global power. Sultan Selim I expanded the lands into Egypt and the Red Sea. Later, Suleiman the Magnificent ruled during the 1500s. He captured Belgrade and parts of Hungary. His armies even reached the gates of Vienna. The empire grew rich by controlling major trade paths between Asia and Europe. It was a time of great strength and wealth.

Eventually, the empire began to face many hard challenges. It fell behind other parts of Europe in new technology. Many wars caused the empire to lose its land. During the early 1900s, there was much fighting and many people suffered. After World War I, the empire was divided by the winning powers. A leader named Mustafa Kemal Atatürk led a war for independence. This led to the end of the empire and the start of modern Turkey.
