Putnik led his troops to many important victories. In the First Balkan War of 1912, he won big battles at Kumanovo and Monastir.

This success led to him becoming a Field Marshal. During the First World War in 1914, he helped Serbia win against Austria-Hungary. He planned the moves for the Battle of Cer and the Battle of Kolubara. These wins helped drive the enemy out of Serbian lands that year. He was a very skilled thinker when it came to planning battles.
