His work as a leader happened in stages. First, he served as the vice president in February 1891. He was an army marshal by this time. Then, the first president, Deodoro da Fonseca, resigned in November 1891. This meant Floriano took over the presidency himself. He led the nation from 1891 until 1894. During this time, he also acted as the President of the Senate. He worked hard to make the new republic stable.

Floriano lived during a very difficult time for Brazil. The country was facing a big economic crisis. This was caused by something called the Encilhamento bubble. This bubble bursting made money problems much worse. However, Floriano's policies helped the economy grow again. He helped stop the many crises that started in 1889. Because of his work, the economy became steady once more. This helped the new republic stay strong.

His time in power saw many big fights. There was a rebellion by naval officers from 1893 to 1894. There was also the Federalist Revolution. This fight happened in Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and Paraná. Floriano used strength to stop these revolts. He wanted to keep the country's land together. His style of leading was very focused on nationalism. Some people even formed a group called "Florianismo" to support him.

Floriano Peixoto was born in 1839 in Alagoas. He fought in the Paraguayan War as a soldier. He died on June 29, 1895, in Barra Mansa. He had been sick with a liver disease for many months. After he died, people still remembered his impact. The city of Nossa Senhora do Terro was renamed Florianópolis. This change happened after he defeated rebels in that city. Many Brazilians later saw his firm rule as a way to stop civil wars.
