Floriano Peixoto was a significant military officer and politician in Brazil. He served as the second president of the Brazilian Republic. Peixoto's career involved several important stages of leadership. He was an army marshal, a high military rank, by 1874. He was elected as the first vice president of Brazil in February 1891. During this time, he also served as the President of the Senate. In November 1891, the first president, Deodoro da Fonseca, resigned from his position. This event led to Peixoto becoming the president himself. He held this office from 1891 until November 15, 1894.

His presidency focused on managing complex political and economic challenges. Brazil was experiencing a general economic crisis at this time. This crisis was made worse by the bursting of the Encilhamento economic bubble. The Encilhamento was a period of financial instability. Peixoto implemented policies to address these growing money problems. His actions helped end the successive economic crises that began in 1889. As a result, the economy stabilized and began to grow again.

Peixoto's rule was also defined by several major internal conflicts. He had to deal with a rebellion by naval officers between 1893 and 1894. He also faced the Federalist Revolution. This revolution took place in the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and Paraná. Peixoto used military strength to defeat these rebels. He did this to maintain the territorial integrity of the country. His use of force ensured that the nation stayed together.

His political style created a new kind of movement in Brazil. His government was characterized by intense nationalism and patriotism. He was a fervent critic of the monarchy, which is a system led by kings or queens. This era saw the rise of "Florianismo." This was a cult of personality focused on him. It was the first time a republican politician in Brazil had such a favorable political expression. His leadership emphasized the centralization of power within the government.

Peixoto was known for his specific social and political stances. He was a veteran of the Paraguayan War and other Brazilian conflicts. Throughout his life, he gained notoriety for his strong views. He was a dedicated abolitionist, meaning he supported ending slavery. He also held strong anti-racist and anti-corruption views. These principles guided much of his reputation as a leader.

History views Peixoto's legacy in different ways. Some people at the time saw his rule as dictatorial. However, later generations of Brazilians often viewed his actions differently. They saw his firm rule as a necessary way to prevent constant civil war. His impact even changed the names of places. For example, the capital of Santa Catarina was renamed Florianópolis. This happened after his troops defeated the federalist rebels in the city of Nossa Senhora do Desterro.

Peixoto's life came to an end due to health struggles. He died on June 29, 1895, in Barra Mansa, Rio de Janeiro. He had been suffering from a serious illness for many months. Historians identify his cause of death as chronic liver disease. This is also commonly known as cirrhosis of the liver. His symptoms were consistent with advanced hepatic failure. His death marked the end of a transformative era for the Brazilian Republic.
