Radomir Putnik was a central figure in Serbian military history. He served as the first Field Marshal of Serbia. This rank is the highest possible military honor in the country. As Chief of the General Staff, he directed many major military operations. He played a vital role during the Balkan Wars and World War I. His leadership helped define the Serbian national identity during a period of intense conflict.

Putnik's career began with a strong academic foundation. He enrolled in the Artillery School in Belgrade to study heavy weaponry. He graduated in 1863 as the eighth-ranked student in his class. He later traveled to Russia to expand his military education. Putnik served as an artillery officer during the wars against the Ottoman Empire from 1876 to 1878. During these conflicts, he commanded forces that captured Gnjilane and Gračanica. He also participated in the Serbo-Bulgarian War in 1885.

His military path was not always steady due to political shifts. In 1895, he was forced into retirement by a royal decree. This happened because of tensions with King Milan I. However, his career saw a major comeback after 1903. Following a coup d'état, King Peter I Karadjordjević brought Putnik back to service. Putnik was promoted to general and appointed Chief of the General Staff. He also served as the Serbian Minister of Army on three separate occasions.

Putnik used his time in leadership to modernize the Serbian military. He reorganized the army by retiring outdated officers. He promoted younger, talented officers to new roles. He also updated obsolete war plans to meet modern needs. During this time, he appointed General Živojin Mišić as his deputy. These reforms prepared the army for the intense fighting that followed.

In 1912, Putnik led the Royal Serbian Army to major victories. During the First Balkan War, his forces won at the Battle of Kumanovo and the Battle of Monastir. These successes led to his promotion to Field Marshal. In 1913, he secured another victory at the Battle of Bregalnica. He achieved this by strategically placing troops near the Bregalnica River. This move allowed a swift response to a sudden Bulgarian attack.

World War I brought even greater challenges to Putnik and Serbia. In 1914, he orchestrated successful defenses against Austria-Hungary. His strategic planning led to victories at the Battle of Cer and the Battle of Kolubara. These wins drove enemy forces out of Serbia by December 1914. However, the situation changed drastically in the autumn of 1915. A massive offensive of over 300,000 troops attacked from multiple directions. This force included German, Austro-Hungarian, and Bulgarian armies.

Despite fierce resistance, the Serbian army was overwhelmed. Putnik ordered a general withdrawal toward Kragujevac in October 1915. The army then retreated through the harsh, snowy mountains of Albania. This journey was extremely difficult for the soldiers and civilians. Many people died from hunger, disease, and enemy ambushes. Out of approximately 250,000 people, only 155,000 reached the Adriatic Sea. The survivors were eventually evacuated to Greek islands like Corfu.

Putnik's health failed during this difficult retreat. He suffered from bronchitis, influenza, and pneumonia. He had to be carried through the mountains in a sedan chair. In early 1916, the Serbian government dismissed the entire General Staff. Putnik moved to Nice, France, where he was treated with honor. He died there on May 17, 1917, from lung emphysema. His remains were returned to Serbia in 1926. He is now buried in a special chapel in Belgrade.
