The Serbian campaign was a series of military battles during the First World War. It took place in the Balkan region between 1914 and 1918. The fighting involved the Kingdom of Serbia and the Central Powers. The Central Powers included Austria-Hungary, Germany, and Bulgaria. This conflict was a very important part of the larger global war. It changed the borders of many lands in Europe.

The first part of the campaign began in the summer of 1914. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia on July 28, 1914.

An Austrian General named Oskar Potiorek led the first invasion. He wanted to carry out what leaders called a punitive expedition. This means the goal was to punish the country. However, the Serbian army and their allies from Montenegro fought back. They won a major victory at the Battle of Cer. This was the first big win for the Allied side in the war.

Things became much harder for Serbia in the next year. On October 6, 1915, a second campaign started. This time, German forces led by Field Marshal August von Mackensen took charge. German, Austro-Hungarian, and Bulgarian armies attacked Serbia from three different sides. This forced the Serbian people into a Great Retreat. They had to travel through Montenegro and Albania to reach Greece. The Central Powers then occupied and divided the land.

The war was very costly for the people of Serbia. The Serbian army grew to 420,000 soldiers at its peak. By the time the war ended, that number dropped to 100,000. Many people in the country lost their lives during these years. Some sources say more than 1,200,000 people died in Serbia. This was about 29% of the total population. For men, the loss was even higher at 60%.

Finally, the Serbian people worked to take back their land. In September 1918, the Allies started the Vardar Offensive. This attack broke through the Macedonian front. French and Serbian forces moved together to free the occupied areas. They helped liberate Serbia, Albania, and Montenegro. The Serbian army finally entered the city of Belgrade on November 1, 1918.
