The Great Retreat was a major event during World War I. It happened in 1915 on the Eastern Front. This was the area where the Russian Empire fought the Central Powers. The Central Powers included Germany and Austria-Hungary. During this time, the Russian military faced a very hard job. They did not have enough equipment to fight well. This made their situation much more difficult.

The retreat happened because of a large attack by the Central Powers. German leaders planned a way to strike the Russian lines. They used several armies to push from different sides. For example, the 11th Army moved north toward Brest-Litovsk. Other armies moved toward the southeast and the northeast. This plan was meant to trap the Russian forces. The Russian leaders saw this danger coming. They decided to move their troops back to a shorter line. This was a choice to avoid being surrounded.

Russian leaders met to make a plan in June 1915. Tsar Nicholas II met with his senior leaders in Baranovichi. They agreed to give up the Polish salient. This is a piece of land that sticks out from a line. The new Russian line would run through many places. These included Riga, Kaunas, Grodno, and Brest-Litovsk. They also planned to move along the Bug and Dniester rivers. This move was meant to be a slow and steady withdrawal. Mikhail Alekseyev helped lead this plan for the Northwest Front.

Many cities and forts were lost during the summer. On August 5, the German 9th Army entered Warsaw. On August 10, the Germans surrounded the Novogeorgievsk Fortress. This fortress fell on August 20. The retreat also forced many civilians to leave their homes. Russian leaders moved 500,000 Jewish people and 250,000 Germans into the Russian interior. The fighting caused huge losses for the Russian army. In just 45 days, they lost up to 1,006,000 men. This included a very large number of prisoners.

This event changed how the war was fought in the east. The Russian army suffered a big blow to its spirit. However, the retreat helped them create a new, stable line. By the end of October 1915, the front lines stopped moving so much. The German leaders decided not to keep attacking. They felt they had gained enough territory for now. The Russian army had to focus on rebuilding its strength. This period showed how hard it was to hold large areas of land.
