The Battle of Tannenberg was a major fight during the first month of World War I. It took place between August 26 and August 30, 1914. The battle was fought in East Prussia between the German and Russian armies.

While the fighting happened near Allenstein, the German leader Paul von Hindenburg named it after Tannenberg. He chose this name to honor a victory from 500 years earlier. This battle became one of the most famous events of the early war. It changed how people saw the strength of the German and Russian militaries.

Success in this battle came from how the armies moved. The German 8th Army used fast rail movements to change their position quickly. They could focus on one Russian army at a time.

First, they delayed the Russian 1st Army. Then, they turned to destroy the Russian 2nd Army. After that, they turned back to face the 1st Army again. This ability to move quickly helped the Germans control the area. It allowed them to strike where they were strongest.

The Russian side faced many difficult problems during the campaign. Their railway network was not very reliable for moving large groups of men. In fact, 75% of Russian railways were only single-tracked.

They also had a very large number of horses and cavalry. Each horse needed ten times more food than a person. This made it very hard to supply the troops. Additionally, the Russian leaders often struggled to agree on plans. General Yakov Zhilinsky and General Alexander Samsonov did not coordinate their directions well.

Communication errors also played a huge role in the outcome. The Russian army failed to use secret codes for their radio messages. This meant they broadcasted their daily marching orders in the clear.

The Germans could read these messages and know exactly where the Russians were going. Because of this, the Germans could move with great confidence. They knew they would not be attacked from the side. This gave the German 8th Army a massive advantage in planning.

The result of the battle was a major victory for Germany. The German army surrounded and almost completely destroyed the Russian 2nd Army.

This event brought great fame to General Paul von Hindenburg and his staff officer, Erich Ludendorff. It also led to the Russian 1st Army being pushed out of East Prussia. The battle is a key example of how technology and organization affect war. It shows how even a large army can struggle without good supplies and clear communication.
