The Brusilov offensive was a massive military operation during World War I. It began in June 1916 and lasted until late September. This battle is known as the Russian Empire's greatest success in the war. It was also one of the deadliest battles in all of history. Historians say it was a huge victory for the Triple Entente. However, it also caused a very large loss of life.

General Aleksei Brusilov led the Russian Southwestern Front. He created a new way to fight that used surprise. Instead of attacking in one single spot, he attacked many places at once. This made it hard for the enemy to know where to send help. He used heavy guns to blast holes in the enemy lines. His soldiers also dug deep trenches to stay safe. They even dug tunnels under barbed wire to get closer to the enemy.

Before the attack, the Russian leaders met to plan. Tsar Nicholas II had taken command of the army in 1915. In April 1916, Brusilov shared his plan with the high command. He wanted to help the French and Italian armies. He also hoped to knock Austria-Hungary out of the war. The Tsar approved the plan, even though some other leaders disagreed. The attack finally started on June 4, 1916.

At first, the Russian attack was very successful. They used many soldiers and many divisions to push forward. The Russian 8th Army worked to capture cities like Lutsk and Kovel. Other armies moved to take Chernivtsi and Kolomyia. The Austro-Hungarian 4th Army lost many men very quickly. In just four days, their strength fell from 117,800 men to only 35,000.

This battle changed many things in the world. It helped the French forces at Verdun by moving German troops away. It also helped Italy by taking pressure off their front. Because of this success, Romania decided to join the war. But the battle was also very hard on Russia. The huge loss of life and supplies helped lead to the Russian Revolution in 1917.
