This battle was the final major fight of the Russo-Japanese War. It was the only time modern steel battleships fought a decisive battle like this. The battle was also special because it was the first time radio was used to help win.

The Russian ships were first seen early on May 27. The fighting began that same afternoon. During the first part, the Russian leader, Admiral Rozhestvensky, was wounded. He was knocked unconscious by the fighting. By the time the sun went down, four Russian battleships had already sunk.

At night, small Japanese boats called destroyers and torpedo boats attacked the rest of the fleet. By the morning of May 28, the Russian leader Admiral Nebogatov surrendered.

Before the battle, the Russian fleet had to go on a very long trip.

They started in the Baltic Sea and sailed for seven months. They wanted to reach Vladivostok to help their army in Manchuria. The trip was very hard on the sailors. Many people got sick because of the different weather and long time at sea. The ships also became slow because they were old and dirty. They had to stop many times to get coal for their engines. They even had a scary moment when they mistook fishing boats for enemy ships near Dogger Bank.

There were many differences between the two sides.

The Japanese fleet was led by Admiral Tōgō Heihachirō. His ships were newer and much faster than the Russian ships. While the Russian fleet was slow, the Japanese ships could move very quickly. The Russians had more battleships, but the Japanese had many more small ships. In total, the Japanese had nearly three times as many hulls. Tōgō also had many commanders who had experience in real sea battles. This helped the Japanese navy stay organized and win.

The results of the battle were huge for both countries.

Russia lost almost all of its 11 big battleships. Seven were sunk and four were captured. More than 5,000 Russian sailors died and 6,000 were captured. Japan lost 117 people but did not lose any heavy ships. Because of this loss, Russia signed a peace treaty in September 1905. In Japan, the victory made Admiral Tōgō a national hero. His famous ship is even kept in a museum today in Yokosuka Harbour.
