The Battle of Myeongnyang was a very important naval fight in 1597. It took place in the Myeongnyang Strait near Jindo Island. This area is located off the southwest corner of the Korean Peninsula. Admiral Yi Sun-sin led the Joseon navy during this time. He had to protect his land from a large Japanese invasion. The Japanese wanted to move north toward the capital city, Hanyang. Today, we know this city as Seoul.

Admiral Yi had a very difficult job ahead of him. He only had 13 warships left to fight with. This was because of a previous loss at the Battle of Chilcheollyang. The Japanese fleet was much larger than the Korean fleet. Some Korean records say there were 133 Japanese ships fighting. Other records suggest there could have been as many as 330 ships in total. This meant the Japanese had at least ten times more ships.

To win, Admiral Yi used a clever plan involving the ocean. He chose to fight in the narrow Myeongnyang Strait. This place has very strong currents that move at 10 knots. The water changes direction every three hours. Yi knew the narrow path would stop the large enemy fleet from surrounding him. He also knew the fast water would make it hard for the Japanese to move. The currents would eventually push the Japanese ships away from his fleet.

On October 26, the battle finally began in the early morning. Admiral Yi's flagship was the first to face the enemy. At first, the other Korean ships were too afraid to join him. Yi's ship stood alone like a castle in the middle of the sea. Eventually, other Korean ships saw his success and came to help. When the tide shifted, the Japanese ships began to crash into each other. The Korean ships used cannons to strike the crowded enemy fleet.

The battle ended with a major defeat for the Japanese navy. During the fight, 31 Japanese warships were sunk or badly damaged. One Japanese commander, Tōdō Takatora, was wounded in the battle. Even with this win, the Joseon navy was still outnumbered. Admiral Yi decided to withdraw to the Yellow Sea to stay safe. After the news of his victory spread, more sailors joined his fleet. His brave choice helped keep the Korean navy alive.
