He also used bright colors and jokes in his work. He used contrasts of colors to make things stand out. These new ways changed how people in Joseon painted.

Kim began his journey as an artist very young. He grew up in a place called Ansan. At age seven, he started studying with a master named Kang Sehwang. In 1766, when he was 21, he joined the Dohwaseo. This was the group of official painters for the royal court. He worked during the reigns of King Yeongjo and King Jeongjo.

That year, he painted "Nineteen Taoist Immortals." This work made him a very famous artist. The Korean Copyright Commission lists 757 paintings by him. He also made seven calligraphies and four moldings.

Today, we still remember Kim Hongdo as a great master. He is known as one of the "Three Wons." Some people even call him one of the three greatest painters of the Joseon era. The city of Ansan honors his memory in many ways. They have an annual Danwon Art Festival. They even named a district Danwon-gu after him. His life is even told in books and movies.
