He changed how artists used brushes to create art. He was a pioneer of landscape painting. This means he focused on scenes of nature. He also helped establish formal brushwork rules. His art was highly valued for its incredible skill.

Wu used very specific ways to make his art look real. He used round strokes to paint people. These strokes made their clothes look like they were flowing.

He also painted mountains, rivers, flowers, and birds. He created large murals in Buddhist and Daoist temples. Some of his work was even carved into stone. These stone carvings helped save his style for later years.

Wu had a difficult start in life. His father died when he was very young. Because of this, he lived in poverty. He first learned calligraphy, which is the art of beautiful writing. He studied this under Zhang Xu and He Zhizhang. After learning to write, he specialized in painting. He traveled widely to create his many works.

Many legends tell stories about Wu's amazing talents. One story says Emperor Xuanzong asked him to paint a palace wall. Wu painted a valley filled with plants and animals. He told the emperor a spirit lived in a cave in the painting. The story says Wu clapped his hands and walked into the cave. Then, the painting vanished from the wall! Another legend says he painted a 300-li river from memory in one day.

We cannot see any of Wu's original paintings today. None of his authentic originals still exist. We only know his work through later copies. Some of his art was preserved in stone engravings. For example, a portrait of Confucius was saved this way. His legacy is still studied by art historians today. His life and stories show the deep spirituality of art.
