Hanshan was a famous poet and spiritual writer from China. He lived during the Tang dynasty a long time ago. Many people wonder if he was even a real person. Some believe he was a Buddhist monk who lived a very quiet life. He was a recluse, which means he lived far away from other people. He spent his time in a remote mountain area.

How Hanshan lived is a mystery filled with legends. A man named Lüqiu Yin wrote that he met Hanshan at a temple kitchen. He said Hanshan and his friend Shide were very strange. They would laugh and then run away quickly. Lüqiu Yin tried to give them clothes and a place to stay. However, the two men fled into a cave that closed itself shut.

There are many different ideas about who Hanshan actually was. Some scholars think he was a monk named Zhiyan. Others suggest he might have been a monk named Caoshan Benji. Some people say the poems belong to the entire Tang dynasty era. It is hard to be sure because the facts often disagree. Even the dates for these different people do not always match up.

Hanshan's work is very special because of how it was made. He did not use paper like most writers do. Instead, he wrote his poems on rocks and cliffs. He also wrote on bamboo, wood, and even the walls of houses. He is thought to have written about 600 poems in total. Today, about 313 of those poems have survived for us to read. Some of these poems even come from his friend Shide.

His poetry is different from the fancy styles of his time. Most poets in the Tang dynasty used very complex and clever words. Hanshan used simple and straightforward language instead. His poems often talk about Buddhist and Taoist ideas. He wrote about how life is short and how nature is beautiful. His words help us imagine a life lived in the mountains.
