Hanshan lived a very quiet life. He lived in a remote mountain area. He was a recluse, which means he lived away from others. He wrote his poems on rocks and trees. He also wrote on pieces of bamboo.

Many people believe he was a holy figure. Some say he was an incarnation of a bodhisattva. A bodhisattva is a being in the Buddhist faith. He often had a friend named Shide. They are often shown together in old paintings.

His poems are very special. They use simple words. They do not use fancy or complex styles. His poems talk about nature and life. They also talk about Buddhist and Taoist ideas. Many of his poems have survived for us to read today. Some people say he wrote 600 poems. We still have over 300 of them.
