He lived during the Northern Song dynasty. He was a court painter. This means he worked for the royal family. He loved to paint landscapes. Landscapes are pictures of nature, like mountains and rivers.

Guo Xi had a special way to paint. He used a style called "floating perspective." This helped people see a scene from many angles. He also used many layers of ink. This made his paintings look real.

One of his famous works is called "Early Spring." He also painted "Deep Valley." This painting shows a quiet valley with snow. It shows old trees on high cliffs.

Guo Xi studied how nature changes. He said spring mountains look like they are smiling. He said summer mountains have a blue-green color. In autumn, they look bright and tidy. In winter, he said mountains look like they are sleeping.

He took great care before he worked. He would sit by a bright window. He would burn sweet incense. He used his finest brushes and ink. He waited until his mind was calm. Then, he began to paint.
