Painting was in his blood. His father and grandfather both painted for kings. Ma Yuan also worked for the court. He was even a favorite of Emperor Ningzong. The emperor wrote poems about Ma Yuan's art.

Ma Yuan is best known for landscape scrolls. These are long paintings of nature. He had a very special style. He often used a "one-corner" way to paint. This means he put the main subject in a corner. Most of the painting stayed empty.
