He lived during the Ming dynasty. He was born to a peasant family. As a young man, he worked with lacquer. Lacquer is a shiny coating used on wood. He painted small designs on this ware. Later, he learned to paint from a teacher named Zhou Chen.

Qiu Ying had a special gift. He could copy old paintings very well. This helped him learn from art from the Song and Yuan dynasties. He used a style called gongbi. This is a way of painting with fine brush strokes. He also used blue and green colors. He painted many things. He painted people, flowers, and wide landscapes. Some people call him one of the Four Masters of his time.

He also made art for books. These were called spring paintings. His family loved art, too. His daughter and son-in-law were both painters. Today, his work is in many museums. You can see his art in Boston and London. One famous work is called The Emperor Guangwu Fording a River.
