Dong also made beautiful paintings. He liked to paint nature scenes. He did not try to make them look perfect. Instead, he wanted his art to show feelings. He used quick strokes to make his art.

Dong had big ideas about painting. He said there were two main styles. He called them the "Northern" school and the "Southern" school. The Northern school used fine lines and colors. The Southern school used quick strokes. Dong liked the Southern school best. He thought artists should learn from old masters. But they should not just copy them. They should make their own new style. His ideas helped many artists in the future. He was even like an early art historian. He helped people decide which art was worth keeping.
