He lived during the later Ming dynasty from 1555 to 1636. Dong was a painter, a calligrapher, and a government official. He was also a famous art theorist. This means he wrote about how art should be made. People in China still study his big ideas today. He helped shape how people look at beautiful things.

As a young boy, Dong was very smart and quick to learn.

He took many difficult tests to work in the government. At age seventeen, he took a major exam. He did not do well at first because his handwriting was clumsy. He did not give up on his goal. He practiced his calligraphy until he became a master. By age thirty-five, he passed the highest level of exams. He eventually worked for the Ministry of Rites.

Dong had very specific ways of making his art. He did not want his paintings to look exactly like real life. Instead, he wanted them to show deep feelings and expression. He often painted landscapes with spaces that looked a bit distorted. He did not like art that was too pretty or sentimental. He also avoided styles that looked too slick or perfect. He used ideas from the Four Masters of the Yuan Dynasty. He wanted to build on the past to make something new.

He also created a famous way to group different styles of painting.

He called these the "Northern" and "Southern" schools. These names did not mean where the artists lived. Instead, they came from ideas in Chan Buddhism. The Northern school used fine lines and bright colors. The Southern school used quick, brushy strokes. Dong loved the Southern school the most. He believed it showed a sudden and true insight.

Dong was like an early version of an art historian. He belonged to a group called the Nine Friends. This group helped decide which paintings were worth collecting. His ideas were very popular with wealthy collectors in many places. This included people in Sungchiang, Huichou, and Yangchou. Many artists in the later Qing dynasty followed his lead. He taught artists to honor old masters while finding their own voice.
