Wen Zhengming was a famous Chinese artist from the Ming dynasty. He was a master of many different crafts. He was a painter, a poet, and a calligrapher. A calligrapher is an artist who writes beautiful characters using a brush. People called him one of the Four Masters of Ming painting. He was very well known for his skill. He lived a long life that shaped his many talents.

Wen Zhengming worked in many different ways. He was part of the Wu school of painting. This group of artists lived near the city of Suzhou. They were called scholar-artists. They did not work for the government or the imperial court. Instead, they looked for private patrons to support them. They often painted in the styles of older masters from the past. Wen also wrote many poems about his art. He believed that art and nature were inseparable.

His journey as an artist began with a great teacher. In 1489, Wen started studying under Shen Zhou. Shen Zhou was the founder of the Wu school. Wen learned a lot from his mentor. Sometimes Wen even added his own poems to Shen Zhou's paintings. This helped the paintings gain a good reputation. Later, Wen became a famous leader in the Wu school himself. He was so talented that people called him a "chameleon." This meant his style could change very easily.

Wen's life was full of important dates and places. He was born on 28 November 1470 near Suzhou. His family originally came from Hengshan County in Hunan province. He used the name Hengshan to sign his art. He married the daughter of a high official around 1490. By 1541, many people thought he was the greatest calligrapher in China. He was especially good at kaishu, or regular script. He was also great at xingshu, which is semi-cursive script.

Art was a very big part of his whole family. His son Wen Peng was a talented seal-engraver. His second son, Wen Jia, was also an artist. Even his great-granddaughter, Wen Shu, was a professional painter. She painted beautiful pictures of flowers and insects. Wen also loved to paint the Humble Administrator's Garden. He made an album of thirty-one views of the garden in 1535. He made another album of eight views in 1551.
