He lived a long time ago. He was born into a royal family. Later, he became a Buddhist monk. He also studied Daoism, which is a Chinese belief system.

Shitao did not want to copy other artists. Most people back then liked to follow old rules. Shitao wanted to use his own way. He called this his own method. He used a "single brushstroke" to start his work. This was a thin, flowing line. He also used big areas of white space. This helped show distance in his art.

His paintings often showed nature.

One painting shows a monk on a boat. The mountain in this art looks like it is bowing. This shows respect between people and nature.

Shitao also made a work called "10,000 Ugly Inkblots." This piece used ink splatters. It challenged what people thought was beautiful. His art was new and very bold.
