Zhao Mengfu was a great artist from China. He lived during the Yuan dynasty. He was a scholar and a painter. He was also a master of calligraphy, which is beautiful ink writing.

Zhao liked to paint horses. He also made many landscape paintings. Most artists at that time used a gentle style. Zhao chose a different way. He used a rougher style from an older time. This change helped start a new way of painting landscapes.

Zhao had a special way to show depth. He did not just use a front and a back. Instead, he layered parts of the land at different heights. This made his art look simple and easy to enjoy. One famous work is called "The Mind Landscape of Xie Youyu." Some people think he made it to honor a teacher instead.

His family loved art too. His wife, Guan Daosheng, was a poet and a painter. Their son, Zhao Yong, also became a famous artist. Today, people can visit his old home. It is now a museum in Huzhou. Even a crater on the planet Mercury bears his name.
