Zhao Mengfu was a famous Chinese artist and scholar. He lived from 1254 to 1322 during the Yuan dynasty. He was a master of many different arts. He practiced calligraphy, which is the art of beautiful writing. He was also a gifted painter and a learned scholar. People valued his work because he changed how art looked. His new ideas helped create modern Chinese landscape painting.

Zhao had a very special way of painting landscapes. Most artists of his time used gentle and refined brushwork. Zhao chose a different path by using a cruder style. This style came from the eighth century. He also changed how he showed depth in his art. Instead of using a front, middle, and background, he used layers. He placed middle grounds at various heights to show depth. This made his paintings feel simple and easy to approach.

Zhao came from a very important family. He was a descendant of the Song dynasty imperial family. His family tree links back to Emperor Taizu. In 1286, he met with Kublai Khan in Dadu. He did not get a high job in the government then. However, the Yuan Emperor Renzong later loved his work. Zhao was also a member of the Academy of Worthies.

His home life was also full of art and skill. He married Guan Daosheng, who was a poet and painter. They had several sons together. His second son, Zhao Yong, became a famous artist too. Zhao was also the grandfather of the painter Wang Meng. One of his famous paintings is "The Mind Landscape of Xie Youyu." A scholar named Lennert Gesterkamp thinks this painting honors a teacher named Du Daojian.

Today, many people still remember the great artist. You can visit his former home in Huzhou, Zhejiang province. It was turned into a museum in 2012. His name is even found in outer space. A large crater on the planet Mercury is named the "Chao Meng-Fu crater." This crater is 167 kilometers wide. It is located at 132.4° west and 87.3° south.
