He lived during the Song Dynasty. This was a time of great art in China. He painted scenes of mountains and nature. His work is very important to history. He acts as a bridge between different eras of art. He connects older painters to the artists who came later. This makes his work a vital link in the story of art.

Li Tang used a special way to move his brush. He perfected a method called "axe-cut" brushstrokes. These strokes look sharp and strong. They make the texture of rocks and mountains look very fine.

This style became very popular. It helped define the academy-style landscapes of the Southern Song. Many people wanted to paint just like him. His unique technique changed how nature looked on paper.

Li Tang was born around the year 1050 in Heyang. He began earning money by painting when he was young.

After 1100, he worked for Emperor Huizong. He earned the highest rank in the Painting Academy. This academy was located in Bianjing, which is now called Kaifeng. He lived through a time of big changes. He survived an invasion by the Jurchen Jin dynasty. This happened between 1126 and 1127.

Because of the invasion, Li Tang moved to a new place. He went to Qiantang, which we now call Hangzhou. This city became the capital for the Southern Song Dynasty. He continued to paint for the court under Emperor Gaozong.

He died around the year 1130. Most of his paintings are hard to find today. One famous work is a large hanging scroll. It is titled "Wind in Pines Among a Myriad Valleys." This is the only painting with his clear signature. The signature says he painted it in the spring of the Hsüan-ho Reign.

Other paintings are also linked to his name. One is called "Gathering Wild Herbs." Another is titled "Sitting on Rocks Gazing at the Mist."

These works are held in places like the National Palace Museum. Artists like Xia Gui and Ma Yuan studied his style. They learned from the way he used his brush. His influence helped shape the art of many future generations. He remains a key figure in the history of Chinese painting.
