Fan Kuan was a famous painter from China. He lived during the Song dynasty. He was born around the year 960. He died around the year 1030. This man was a master of landscape painting. A landscape is a painting of nature. He held two different beliefs called Daoism and Neo-Confucianism.

His most famous work is a large hanging scroll. It is called Travelers among Mountains and Streams. This painting uses three different planes to show depth. The first plane is the near part. The middle plane shows water and mist. The far plane shows the distant view. This style helps the viewer feel the space.

In the front part, the brush strokes are very crisp. You can see jutting boulders and tough scrub trees. There is a temple hidden in the forest. A mule train moves along a road. A packhorse train is also seen near the woods. These small things are at the base of a huge cliff.

The center of the painting has a towering peak. It looks like a massive backdrop. It seems to hang in a slot behind the front part. This mountain is the main theme of the art. In older art, nature was just a background. Fan Kuan made nature the star of the show. The people in the scene look very small. They seem tiny next to the mystery of the world.

Fan Kuan's style changed how people painted. His work became an ideal for many later artists. They looked to his paintings for inspiration. For a long time, his signature was hidden. It was a lost part of the masterpiece. People finally found the signature in 1958. His art still tells a grand story today.
